We continue the extensive presentation of the 2016 nominations for the energynomics Awards, with the Corporate Social Responsability section. Only one of the projects below will be awarded during the Gala from December 8th, but every company and all the people involved in these projects deserve our respect and an extended promotion.
ENGIE România
Energy for a chance at life
Health is the most precious gift for people and for nations, and in Romania the deficiencies of the public health system are well known. ENGIE Romania is a major player in the energy market and has redefined its social responsibility strategy in 2012 following a survey of the household and business customers, opinion leaders and its employees. According to the study results, health is considered – by all the categories of respondents – a priority area of intervention to initiate and implement projects in social responsibility. In this respect, ENGIE Romania, in partnership with Asociatia Daruieste Viata, launched in 2013 the ,,Energy for a chance at life” program, aimed at improving the Romanian medical system by modernizing some medical centers of vocational excellence and providing them with high performance medical equipment.
The “Energy for a chance at life” program reunites all the performed health projects, initiated by ENGIE Romania in cooperation with Asociatia Daruieste Viata. Under the program, projects have already been performed in 2013, 2014 and 2015. ENGIE Romania continued in 2016 the,,Energy for a chance at life” program to improve the medical system by equipping certain public medical institutions in Romania with invasive and non-invasive ventilation devices, vital for the hospitalized patients.
According to a statistic of the Romanian Society of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care made at the beginning of 2016, the necessary mechanical ventilation devices for the 65 public hospitals considered in the analysis was about 632 pieces. To address this need, Asociatia Daruieste Viata and ENGIE Romania launched the project of equipping with 14 Mechanical Ventilation Apparatus the following public medical institutions: Pneumology Hospital in Constanta, Children’s Hospital Brasov, “Marius Nasta” Institute, Clinical Emergency Hospital for Children “Grigore Alexandrescu”.

Meet the Energy
The „Meet the Energy” program aims to teach the younger generation about how to use the energy resources responsibly and safely, realizing the importance of protecting the environment. The program involves two lessons taught interactively to the pupils in the fourth grade and a competition, all for the support of the teachers from the primary school, teaching the “natural sciences” class to the 4th grade, and the interactive lessons are supported by volunteers of ENGIE Romania and of the Association Hands Across Romania.
“Meet the Energy” is a traditional program for ENGIE, launched in October 2007 and conducted every year in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Scientific Research. The program addressed, until now, to more than 26.500 4th grade pupils. Over 120 ENGIE volunteers were involved in the project so far, investing over 3.000 hours of volunteering in this action. The mascot, called Metano, was created in 2007 by a participating pupil and represents the information interface submitted to the students.
During the two lessons, concepts of the sources and types of energy and their various uses in everyday life were described, with a particular focus on the safe use of natural gas and environmental protection principles. The program supports teachers for the primary education in teaching the “Natural” class to the 4th grade and the interactive lessons are supported by the ENGIE Romania and Hands Across Romania Association volunteers.

A new school, a better future
Energy efficiency is an important axis of the ENGIE Romania’s CSR policy, which has resulted in large-scale projects with a stronger social component. Thus, after the thermal rehabilitation and upgrading of the social housing complex SOS Satele Copiilor and of the Secondary School from the Băleni commune, Galati County, ENGIE Romania continued the series of projects with the modernization for energy efficiency at School No. 125 in Bucharest. This educational establishment – which houses 300 children between 3 and 14 years old and 50 teachers – has been completely renewed for energy efficiency.
After an investment of 185.000 euros, the 300 children studying in Secondary School no. 125 began the new school year in a healthy and welcoming environment, thanks to “A new school, a better future” project, majority financed by ENGIE Romania and implemented by Habitat for Humanity Romania Association.
During the summer vacation, about 150 volunteers, international and employees of ENGIE Romania, contributed to the work.
KMG International
Partnership with SMURD
In 2016, the Group, through its member companies Rominserv and Rompetrol Gas, continued to support the emergency medical interventions of SMURD, nationally, and donated to the emergency unit at Floreasca Emergency Hospital an Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation machine (ECMO), as well as uniforms for the medical volunteers of SMURD (over 750, nationally).
Between 2010-2016 the support consisted in fuel for helicopters, medical devices, extrication intervention software, uniforms for volunteers etc.
The partnership with SMURD, started in 2010 and extended annually. Until 2015 it consisted in the donation of a quantity of fuel required for the operation of the aero-medical helicopters. This was justified by the increasing number of cases in which the intervention by helicopter was necessary, but also for aligning the service to the international standards in the field, which required the growth of the number of aircrafts. Automatically, the operating costs increased, and the sums for the fuel acquisition neared each year to several hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Through Rompetrol’s donation, SMURD could respond to all the requests for emergency coming from the country. Between 2010-2015, Rompetrol Rafinare, member company of the KMGI International, provided fuel for the medical helicopters operated by the Mobile Emergency Resuscitation and Extrication Service (SMURD), facilitating transport and saving the lives of 5.808 injured people and totalled 10.347 flight hours.
