The number of prosumers in Romania has unexpectedly increased, and the pressure to balance the national power system is now shifting onto the shoulders of renewable producers, said Cristian Dragomir, CEO of WALDEVAR Energy, at the conference “Digitalization and energy efficiency – Brașov 2024” organised by Energynomics and the Italian Chamber of Commerce for Romania.

“We can’t blame the prosumers, but, indeed, something totally unexpected has happened, the number of prosumers has increased unexpectedly. If now we can say that we have a completely even balance between prosumers and renewables, the pressure is also shifting to renewables, because a large part of the 2 GW they installed has disappeared from the market and gone to prosumers,” he said.

In view of the market situation, Dragomir says that this second wave of renewables in Romania will repeat some of the situations observed in the first wave, that of 2010-2012, namely a series of bankruptcies of small companies. However, companies that want to stay in the market are already taking safety measures, such as investing in renewable energy storage facilities.

“There is a cyclicality. There were bankruptcies 10 years ago and there will certainly be bankruptcies now, and small investors will be bought out for little money by big investors. It is a reality and a risk assessment,” Dragomir added.

The conference “Digitalization and energy efficiency – Brașov 2024” was organised by Energynomics and the Italian Chamber of Commerce for Romania, with the support of our partners: Bepco, Exim Banca Românească,  ICAP CRIF, Intesa Sanpaolo Bank, Polytrade Global, SolarX Power, Unicredit Bank, WALDEVAR Energy, WEBUS 4 ENERGY.
