OMV Petrom board member Cristian Hubati gave an in-depth look at the progress and challenges in the energy sector at the Energynomics Awards 2024 Gala. His speech was centred on the importance of balancing energy resilience and the transition to cleaner energy sources in the context of Europe’s rapid transformation.
“Europe’s dependence on Russian gas and the conflict in Ukraine have put energy resilience centre stage. At the same time, the green transition brings us a double challenge: to ensure a continuous and secure energy supply while moving towards cleaner energy,” said Hubati.
He emphasised that Romania and Europe are in a more stable position than in previous years, thanks to the development of new energy projects. “The situation has emphasised the importance of energy production both for us as a country and for Europe. Our projects in recent years, especially in renewables, nuclear and natural gas, have made significant progress.”
Strategy 2030: major projects and concrete commitments
A centrepiece of the speech was OMV Petrom’s strategy for 2030, focused on portfolio diversification and sustainability. Hubati highlighted the Neptune Deep project, a key investment in natural gas production, which is on schedule to start drilling in 2025 and production in 2027.
At the same time, the company is moving ahead with the development of a portfolio of more than 2 GW in renewable energy, the expansion of the network of charging stations for electric vehicles – from 800 today to 5,000 by 2030 – and the construction of a unit for the production of sustainable fuels at Petrobrazi. “This unit will make us the first sustainable fuel producer in this part of Europe,” emphasised Hubati.
He also emphasised the industry’s responsibility to support the transition to a sustainable future. “We have a shared responsibility to deliver energy that sustains the economy, supports communities and paves the way to a better future. It is no easy task, but ambition, collaboration and innovation show that anything is possible,” he concluded.
Cristian Hubati concluded with a message of encouragement to the participants, congratulating them on their achievements and reminding them of the importance of recognising industry efforts. “I wish you all enjoy this beautiful evening and recognising the achievements of all those present here,” he said.
