The Prague government on Monday approved a plan to grant an interest-free loan to Czech utility group CEZ to cover the cost of building a new nuclear power plant that would replace old coal-fired power plants and nuclear reactors.

“We provide a stable source of electricity at a reasonable price,” Industry Minister Karel Havlicek wrote on Twitter.

The loan will help the new reactor at the current Dukovany plant get closer to economic viability. The government also plans to buy electricity from the 1,200-megawatt plant at an agreed price of construction costs, to support CEZ.

The plan must be approved by the European Commission, according to Agerpres.

The Czech government and the state-controlled CEZ have said the project could cost about six billion euro, but critics point out that nuclear projects almost always exceed initial estimates.

A government document consulted by Reuters shows that the loan would cover 70% of the cost. Initially it will be interest free, then a 2% interest will be charged after the unit is operational.
