Europe and the US will not allow Russia to regain its empire, as the regime in Moscow intends to do. Washington wants to work with Romania and other countries in the region on energy development projects, especially now that dependence on Russia has been eliminated, said Daniel Fried, distinguished fellow at the Atlantic Council.
“This war is just one effect of Putin’s desire to regain his empire. There are also implications for the energy sector. Developing the energy sector is not just good business, it is an important security measure. It is crucial and it must be profitable. Demand for green and nuclear energy will grow. Gas is better for the environment than coal and is already attracting investment,” Fried said at the Energy Strategy Summit 2024, organized by Energynomics.
He emphasized the importance of developing new non-Russian energy sources from Europe and other regions and recalled that the US has for many years warned Western European countries, especially Germany, that Russia is using its energy resources for strategic purposes and the risk of over-dependence on Russian gas. He also praised Romania for the appropriate way it had used its “35 years of freedom”.*
“We have known since the 1990s that Russia would seek to subjugate its neighbors, which is why we expanded NATO and invited Romania to join 20 years ago. Western Europe, especially Germany, did not heed those warnings. Now Germany has realized the error of depending on Russian gas. Currently, Russian gas supplies to Europe are minimal and I don’t think Europe will fall into Russian hands again,” he added.
