Data centres have become energy-intensive units, and this directly affects us, generating potential performance imbalances, said Marius Poșa, Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digitalization (MCID), at the DigitALL 2024 conference organized by Energynomics.

Digitalization is a topic of great interest, and the lessons of the great industrialization of the 20th century underline the importance of learning from past mistakes to avoid repeating them. Digital transformation requires all stakeholders to work together to reach relevant conclusions.

“To prioritise digital transformation, it is essential to bring all stakeholders to the same table. Many companies in Romania only tangentially encounter the NIS Directive, but it will impose new obligations, making us a unified system. Thus, any dysfunction, even of the smallest player, will affect the whole ecosystem,” Poșa said.

He added that energy, energy security and critical infrastructure are interdependent. In Romania, the energy-related digital sector is well developed, with the government successfully managing the current challenges. Moreover, from an institutional point of view, the cloud is starting to emerge as an effective solution, providing support to reduce data centre overload and promoting interoperability, which is essential for the efficient operation of critical infrastructure.

He added that companies and institutions in Romania must develop solutions adapted to the national specific and motivate specialists to stay in the country. For this to happen, the public needs to be more involved in the legislative debate.

“It’s time to stop wanting things to be like they are somewhere else and learn to make them right here. We need to train and motivate our specialists to stay in the country. We have become used to thinking that somewhere else is better. If we got more involved and all the players worked together, we would come to much more relevant conclusions,” Poșa said.

DigitALL 2024 was organized by Energynomics, in partnership with reputed organizations such as the CIO Council, with the support of our partners: Corning, Datacor, Eaton Electric, Enevo Group, Procesio, Siemens, Sixt, Vertiv.
