Romania is stuck in a gridlock on the development of new green energy plants both because of the government “not helping its own country” and the banks, which do not provide enough financing to companies that want to do such projects, said Robert Kenderessy, Regional Sales Manager Balkans Area, SolaX Power.

“We need to start working directly with the customer and banks need to liaise directly with the beneficiaries. If banks fail to make acceptable offers to finance green energy projects, inverter and solar panel manufacturers will do so because they will have no choice. Manufacturers and banks should co-operate better to take things forward,” said Kenderessy, at the conference “Digitalization and energy efficiency – Brașov 2024” organised by Energynomics and the Italian Chamber of Commerce for Romania.

He bemoaned the state of development of renewable energy units, saying that “Romania is not just lagging behind, but is directly on the knife’s edge”. While some EU countries have already reached their decarbonisation targets, Romania is barely managing to install 500 MW of new green projects per year, although there are funds available, but the country is failing to use them. As a result, the market is in gridlock.

“We are stuck waiting for the state or the AFM to come up with various projects. We are all waiting for the elections to be over, for the government to finalise its internal circuit for this area. It is outrageous that the government is not helping its own country and at least informing it that there are funds available for green energy projects. To install only 500 MW in one year is very little; other countries install that much in a few months. There is money available, but Romania is not accessing it,” he added.
