DP World is preparing to launch a new eco-friendly concept in the Port of Constanta to avoid huge fuel consumption during the loading or unloading of ships at berth, said Cornel Peleanu, senior director, business development and projects at DP World Romania.
“At our terminal in the Port of Constanta we can install these sockets. There are at most ten ports in the world that will be able to offer this facility,” said Peleanu, at the conference “Digitalization and Energy Efficiency – Constanța”.
This concept, called cold ironing or shore connection, is the process of supplying electricity to a vessel at berth while its main and auxiliary engines are switched off. In this way, fuel consumption can be drastically reduced, especially as some vessels are sometimes docked at berth for several days.
On the other hand, DP World uses 10-11 tonnes of diesel per day, but plans to eliminate CO2 emissions and use only electricity.
“We have a project underway whereby the entire terminal will be electrified and automated. The company’s goal is to have zero CO2 emissions by 2040. Very big investments are being made,” added Peleanu.

The company, present in Romania since 2004, operates an 84-hectare terminal in the Port of Constanta, in which it has invested €200 million over the past 20 years, and a month ago completed another 10-hectare multimodal terminal in Aiud, near Cluj-Napoca.
Both of the company’s terminals can be used to handle large equipment and installations, such as wind turbine blades or photovoltaic panels, as well as materials needed for gas exploration in the Black Sea.
At the same time, DP World has leased another terminal in Dornesti on the Ukrainian border.
