The European Commission is analyzing the possibility of asking member states for plans to reduce electricity consumption, in line with the voluntary agreement on the 15% decrease in gas consumption, but Brussels wants debates with EU countries before lining up any additional measure, reports EFE.

“Emergency measures regarding electricity prices are being worked on. Also, something related to the reduction of electricity demand could appear,” said the Director General for Energy in the EC, Mechthild Worsdorfer, at the Committee for Industries in the European Parliament.

This possibility will represent one of the themes that will be addressed by the Ministers of Energy from the European Union countries at the extraordinary meeting convened in Brussels, on September 9, where they will also discuss the possibility of decoupling the price of gas from that of electricity or the imposition of a maximum gas price, according to Agerpres.

“Once we have a gas saving plan in progress, certainly electricity is another area that we could, possibly, take into account. But it is a little premature to say that the European Commission will propose,” said, at a press conference, the spokesman for Energy of the Community Executive, Tim McPhie.

The gas saving plans, which are already being implemented by a number of member states, such as Spain or Germany, already include measures to reduce electricity consumption, as for example in terms of street lighting, measures appreciated by Worsorfer.

The Commission does not yet have concrete data in mind for the presentation of a formal proposal regarding the “emergency mechanism” to limit the influence of the cost of gas in the formation of prices on the electricity market, as the EC president announced on Monday, European sources cited by EFE reported.
