According to a report of the European Commission upon the evaluation of the implementation of EU environmental policies in the Member States, the resource efficiency in Romania is low, the circular economy, underdeveloped, and the recycling and composting levels well below the European average.
The EC claims that Romania has very low recycling and composting levels, ie 16%, compared to the European average of 44%, as well as high rates of landfilling.
“The transition of the economies from a linear structure to a circular one, offers the opportunity to reinvent them and make them more sustainable and competitive. Thus, we can stimulate investment and can bring benefits both for the short and long term for the economy, environment and citizens. The resource efficiency in Romania is low and the circular economy is underdeveloped”, said the EC officials.
The report states, in the “Air Quality” chapter, that in Romania the emissions of air pollutants have decreased significantly and fit within the national emission standards applicable today.
“These trends must continue if it is desired that Romania will comply in terms of air quality. Romania must step up its efforts to meet the EU air quality standards”, the European officials have said.
On the other hand, Romania has a number of opportunities to fulfill its commitments, one of them being “eliminating the obstacles from the path of the adequate absorption and focusing the EU funding, but also using the next cycle of the river basin management, in order to improve the monitoring networks and the evaluation methods of the water status”, also mentions the EC report.
