Romania’s electric car power infrastructure is developing slowly, with only 5% growth per year, compared to 21% worldwide, said Ionuț Muntean, Managing Director at DEKRA Romania.

“Unfortunately, in terms of infrastructure, although we are on a pretty good road, there is still a lot of work to be done. We have an annual growth rate of 5% in the number of charging stations installed, which puts us well below the world average of 21%. The infrastructure is not growing fast enough and we are finding that we are not coping with the growing number of electric vehicles and unfortunately sales are also declining,” he said, at the DigitALL 2024 conference organized by Energynomics.

At the same time, Romania has an average of 13.7 electric vehicles per charging station, compared to the world average of 19.8. This is explained not by the existence of infrastructure, but by the low number of electric cars.

DEKRA employs 45,000 people in more than 60 countries and provides traction battery testing services for nearly 70 electric car models now on the road.

“It’s a quick test that takes 15 minutes and provides data on the health of the battery. The battery is a cause for anxiety, because in some models the value of the battery is more than 50% of the price of the car,” Muntean said.

He added that the risks of fires in electric cars are a myth. They are different from other fires, and the company even offers courses on the proper use of electric cars. On the other hand, Muntean pointed out, Romania lacks legislation to regulate the safety and stability of charging stations for electric cars.

DigitALL 2024 was organized by Energynomics, in partnership with reputed organizations such as the CIO Council, with the support of our partners: Corning, Datacor, Eaton Electric, Enevo Group, Procesio, Siemens, Sixt, Vertiv.
