Lack of information creates a fear of change among consumers, and the mission of the Association for Electric Mobility (AME) is to open the “information box to them” and persuade them to buy electric cars, said association president Christian Macedonschi.

“Electric mobility is the mobility of the future. Policy and legislation need to be as clear as possible to raise awareness of electric cars,” Macedonschi said, at the DigitALL 2024 conference organized by Energynomics.

He added that, although the infrastructure serving electric cars is still precarious at present, it is developing rapidly and the role of the association he leads is to promote and facilitate the transition to sustainable electric mobility in Romania, in close collaboration with the relevant authorities at national and European level. The association also supports the development of a robust charging infrastructure for electric vehicles using green energy.

Subsidies for taking off…

However, the government should encourage the growth of this industry by providing subsidies to businesses that want to replace their car fleets. Subsidies would also be needed to extend high-voltage power lines.

“The transition will be smooth, going through hybrid to full electric. Maybe we would need financial support and a subsidy project for companies to switch fleets to electric. Companies need to create their own network of charging stations, invest in electric cars and this is where they should be incentivised. Similarly, investment in the high-voltage grid should be subsidised,” he said.

… and simplified legislation

Christian Macedonschi also referred to the bottlenecks arising from the lack of consistency in national legislation, mainly regarding the obligation to equip electric car charging equipment with electronic fiscal cash registers. “It is a redundant measure with a fiscal role, when we already have the obligation to equip these machines with POS terminals”, Christian Macedonschi stressed. Representatives from authorised dealers of electronic cash registers with electronic logging say it will take at least six months to set up, authorise, and connect the communication protocols between the fiscal module and the POS built into the charging stations. “This obligation makes it impossible to implement new electric charging stations by the end of the year,” warns AME.

“Failure to take these obstacles into account will hinder the operators of loading equipment in fulfilling the conditions imposed in the funding programmes and will be a brake on the development of the market,” Macedonschi summed up.
