Romania’s electricity consumption is inversely proportional to production and this situation is not expected to improve in the coming years, said Daniel Balaci, Director of Network Operation, Maintenance and Development, Transelectrica.

“Every day there are new applications for connection to the grid. We have an energy consumption inversely proportional to production and we don’t see an improvement in the next few years. We have a consumption of 8,000 MW per day and we have connection contracts and ATRs issued for about 15,000 MW,” Balaci said, at the conference “2024: A defining year for the renewable energy sector in Romania”.

The volume of grid connection applications is also approaching the 60,000 MW level, more than three times the total installed capacity in the country today.

That’s why the process of connecting new power generation units to the grid will require a number of changes, and not all of them will be to everyone’s liking. Care must be taken in connecting these new projects to the grid, because the transmission grid is not an energy storage capacity.

Given the high demand for equipment for the energy sector, Balaci advises companies applying for ATRs to clearly specify in the documentation all deadlines for completion and commissioning.

The conference “2024: A defining year for the renewable energy sector in Romania” was organized by Energynomics with the support of our partners: ADC, Alive Capital, CRC Energy, Elektra Renewable Support, EnergoPower, Ensys, Extro, Horváth, ING Bank, LONGi Solar, Monsson Operation, Nofar Energy, OX2 România, Photomate, PNE Romania, Polytrade Global, REI Grup, Renomia, Sph3ra Management Solutions, Transelectrica, WALDEVAR Energy, Wiren Romania. On this occasion, Energynomics launched its first report under the initiative “Monitor of the Romanian Photovoltaic Projects”.
