The energy price in Romania on the spot market dropped by half, compared to last week, with an average of 123 lei per MWh, as a result of the large wind energy production in Europe, especially in Germany, and a smaller consumption, due to the Catholic Easter.

The price in our country is influenced by what is happening in the Western markets, as the spot market in Romania is coupled with those in Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and these two countries have massive physical exchanges with Germany where there are many wind capacities.

In euro, the energy price reaches 25.88 euros per MWh in Romania and Hungary, while in the Czech Republic and Slovakia it is very low, 3.98 euros as a daily average and even negative, respectively -6.20 euro per MWh, at the peak of consumption, according to OPCOM, the operator of the Romanian energy market, quoted by Agerpres. „Prices are very low in the Czech Republic and Slovakia because they are physically coupled with Germany, where wind has been very strong and there is a very high wind energy production, with a very low consumption period as a result of the free days due the Catholic Easter,” said Ion Lungu, president of the Romanian Electricity Suppliers Association (AFEER).

According to him, the influence is also felt on the Romanian market, where prices are pulled down.

At the same time, the negative price in the Czech Republic and Slovakia means that energy producers pay to stay in operation, ie they prefer to pay and produce rather than to close capacities, Lungu said. „The advantage for them is that while they lose at the price of energy, they earn by receiving green certificates. In states where there is a feed-in tariff, it is higher than the amount they pay to stay in operation,” said the AFEER president.
