Romania needs a lot of heat pumps in the coming years to reach the decarbonization target in the heating and cooling sector, said Sorin Elisei, director general of the Ministry of Energy, at a specialized event.

“On the electricity side, we are starting to do well. In 2030, Romania has a reduction in emissions in the energy sector compared to 1990, of 87% – and this is largely due to the “coal’s fault”, so to speak, the elimination of coal, as we assumed the targets through the PNRR,” said Sorin Elisei, quoted by Financialintelligence.

In his opinion, carbon capture and storage could be an element that our country could take advantage of, offshore rather than on-shore, but also an opportunity that is directly linked, for example, to the cement industry.

“We will need a lot of heat pumps in the coming years so that we can achieve our decarbonization target in the heating and cooling sector. We see how other countries have attracted investment in factories – and that’s what I think we should be heading towards. As Mr. Fechet (Minister of the Environment, n.r.) said about the investment in a glass factory, we should go towards the producers of “net zero” technologies. The renewable part, for which billions and billions of euros have been allocated, is on a good path,” added Sorin Elisei.

The Minister of the Environment mentioned on Wednesday that, currently, sources of financing are being sought at the governmental level with the aim of attracting an investment in Romania for glass processing, given that the glass industry is one with high added value, which requires investments and costs of very large operation.
