Romania has a satisfactory level of energy security thanks to its production capacities, including future offshore wind and gas units, said Gabriel Andronache, Vice-President of the National Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE). However, efficient gas and electricity connections are needed to ensure energy security.

“In the last year, the energy and gas market has evolved a lot,” Andronache said at the Energy Strategy Summit 2024, organized by Energynomics.

Romania has an installed capacity of 6,600 MW in hydro, 3,026 MW in wind, 1,638 MW in solar and 1,700 MW from prosumers, resulting in a total installed capacity of 20,000 MW, of which 65% is renewable energy.

“Even so, we need to install new renewable capacity as long as we benefit from EU funds. Interest is high and 17,000 ATRs are now issued and another 50,000 are in the pipeline,” Andronache explained.

He pointed out that recently legislation has been put in place to allocate capacity through auctions, and the funds obtained will be used to develop the networks. In addition, Romania should also encourage the battery energy storage sector. Investments in this sector have already started, with 7 MW currently operational and another 24 MW capacity in the pipeline.

“Many will move into storage investments, which will create a balance in the grid. The need for storage capacity would be 5,500 MW, but if we had 1,500 MW now, things would change significantly,” he added.
