Romania must address regulatory and fiscal issues to further facilitate the energy transition, a process that creates space for further investments and opportunities, said Christina Verchere, CEO of OMV Petrom.

“What we have learned in the past few years is the importance of security of supply and diversity of supply. And this has accelerated the energy transition and underlined the importance of local energy resources. We can’t say we are back to normal yet, but the numerous changes in the past years have created a lot of space for the energy transition,” Verchere stated, at the “Spring Cocktail 2024” event organised by Energynomics.

She emphasized that OMV Petrom will have an important role to play in the energy transition of Romania, and the company sees many opportunities on the gas side, but also the renewable sector is very promising.

“Neptune Deep will make Romania the largest gas producer in the EU. This is important because it replaces the gas supply that is coming from places that we don’t want [it to come from], with domestic gas supply. We see gas as an important part of the energy transition going forward,” she added.

Also, OMV Petrom is poised to put on the market 2 TWh of wind and solar energy by the end of the decade and also 55 MW of green hydrogen into the Petrobrazi oil refinery.

The company will install, by 2030, around 1,000 EV chargers in Romania, and this objective will be reached via transactions as well.

By 2021, the company invested an average of 3.5 billion lei per year, but from now on, it will be investing 8 billion lei per year in the Neptune Deep natural gas perimeter and for energy transition projects.

For the 11th year in a row, Energynomics organized Spring Cocktail, an original concept event dedicated to the exchange of ideas on the Romanian energy industry. This year’s edition benefited from the support of our partners: BCR, E.On, Electrica Furnizare, Huawei, OMV Petrom, Renomia, Romgaz, WALDEVAR Energy.
