Decarbonization of the energy sector will only become a reality when renewable energy plants will be able to sell energy throughout the day, said Răzvan Rădulescu, Dipl. Engineer & Journalist, Software Media.
“Until a renewable power plant can sell energy throughout the day, nothing can be decarbonized. During the day we have no one to sell energy to, let’s be honest,” he said at the Energy Strategy Summit 2024, organized by Energynomics.
In this context, energy storage units can play a crucial role, especially as they also benefit from EU financial support. They can help to balance energy flows and ensure a constant supply even when production fluctuates.
Rădulescu said that there are enough tools available today to control imbalances in the energy system, the flow of energy and thus producers’ revenues.
“One of these problems is when the imbalance goes into surplus, and that happens when a power plant produces more energy than it should, because the forecasts are purely informative,” he explained.
In order to manage these imbalances, generators’ business decisions need to be made on the day of energy delivery, and for this it is essential that they are very well informed.
“Those imbalances can be solved if producers are less greedy and can let the price down a bit,” he concluded.
