Enery is set to bring online its first 20 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Romania, marking a significant milestone in its expansion strategy. The storage asset, located at Sărmășag, will become operational in the coming months, according to Petya Dimova, Head of Energy Portfolio Optimization at Enery.
“We have 10 operational assets in Romania, and Sărmășag will be the first to include storage. Next month, we will start optimizing storage operations here, alongside another storage unit that we expect to commission in Estonia. In Bulgaria, we already have five operational storage assets,” Dimova stated at the conference “Stepping stones for the BESS technologies development”, organised by Energynomics.
The commissioning of the Romanian storage unit is part of Enery’s broader plan to optimize its energy portfolio in Central and Eastern Europe. By the end of the year, the company plans to expand its storage capacity, integrating additional storage units into existing projects and new developments.
Storage optimization model and market strategy
Enery will implement in Romania the same market optimization strategy already tested in Bulgaria. In the first stage, the company will focus on Spot Market optimization, primarily targeting intra-day trading and market balancing strategies. Additionally, the company will explore ancillary services, participating in frequency regulation markets.
“Since last year, we have established a Power Trading division that is already active in Romania and Bulgaria. This year, we will extend our trading operations to Estonia, Austria, and the Czech Republic. Optimization is crucial for the efficient operation of renewable assets. We analyze multiple models to determine the best approach for each market,” Dimova explained.
A comprehensive approach to storage optimization
Enery’s Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) optimization strategy leverages advanced algorithms and market data to maximize profitability per MWh discharged. The company provides a platform for automated multi-market trading, optimizing battery dispatch across various energy and ancillary services markets, including the Day-Ahead Market (DAM), Intra-Day Market (IDM), and balancing services such as FCR, aFRR, and mFRR.
Additionally, Enery offers various commercial models for asset owners, including fixed tolling agreements, profit-sharing mechanisms, and hybrid pricing structures, with contract durations ranging from one to five years. This flexible approach allows independent asset owners to integrate their storage units into Enery’s optimization platform.

“Our expertise extends beyond our own assets. We also collaborate with third-party projects, providing trading and optimization services for independent storage operators. Our solutions are tailored to different market conditions, ensuring the best possible financial performance for our partners,” Dimova added.
Scaling up in Romania and beyond
With 490 MW of operational capacity across its portfolio, Enery is actively expanding its storage and renewable energy assets. In Romania, the company operates 169 MW of renewable capacity, producing 268 GWh annually. Alongside its energy trading and storage projects, Enery is committed to sustainability, having initiated five ESG-focused projects in the region.
The upcoming storage projects will strengthen Enery’s position in the regional market, helping to stabilize grid operations and enhance the profitability of renewable energy generation. As energy markets across Europe shift toward greater reliance on flexible and dispatchable storage solutions, Enery’s integrated storage-trading model positions it as a key player in the next phase of the energy transition.
