The European Commission may delay the date on which it is to publish its roadmap for phasing out the last remaining fuels it imports from Russia, including liquefied natural gas, several sources close to the matter told Bloomberg.

The EU executive could present its plan on March 26, a month later than initially expected, the sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity. The roadmap would detail the steps EU member states must take to completely phase out Russian fuel, in a bid to limit funding for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to Agerpres.

Liquefied gas remains one of Europe’s most important energy dependencies on Russia, after Ukraine ended the transit of Russian natural gas through pipelines. Last year, the EU bought record amounts of Russian liquefied gas, with France, Spain and Belgium the biggest importers. Several EU member states also import nuclear fuel from Russia.

A group of 10 member states have called for tougher measures against Russia, including restrictions on natural gas and liquefied natural gas. However, such efforts are complicated by the need for unanimity among the bloc’s 27 member states. Brussels has set a non-binding target of completely phasing out Russian fuels by 2027.

The bloc plans to adopt its 16th package of sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine in February, three years after the start of the Russian invasion.
