Eurostat: Wind and hydro, Europe’s main green sources in 2020

In 2020, renewable energy sources accounted for 37% of gross electricity consumption in the European Union, a slight increase from 34% in 2019, according to data released by the European Statistical Office (Eurostat).

Wind and hydropower accounted for more than two-thirds of all renewable electricity (36% and 33%, respectively). The rest of the energy generated was from solar energy (14%), solid biofuels (8%) and other renewable energy sources (8%). Solar energy was the fastest growing source, accounting for only 1% of electricity consumed in the European Union in 2008.

Among the 27 EU Member States, more than 70% of electricity consumed in 2020 was generated from renewable energy sources in Austria (78%) and Sweden (75%) according to, Agerpres.

Also, over 50% of electricity consumed in 2020 was generated from renewable energy sources in Denmark (65%), Portugal (58%), Croatia and Latvia (both with 53%), and over 40% of electricity consumed in 2020 was generated from renewable energy sources in Germany (44.7%), Romania (43%) and Spain (42.9%).

On the other hand, 15% or less of the electricity consumed in 2020 was generated from renewable energy sources in Malta (10%), Cyprus and Hungary (both with 12%), Luxembourg (14%) and the Czech Republic (15%).
