The Ministry of Public Finance (MFP) wants the state bank Eximbank to become a universal bank, that is to address the segment of individuals as well. In this regard, it has prepared a draft Emergency Ordinance. According to a June announcement by Eximbank, it would be about the Banca Romaneasca.
According to the foundation note, “the need arises for EximBank to diversify its banking activity by entering the retail area through mergers and acquisitions, which will increase the ability to generate income and lead to the diversification of the financing base through deposits attracted from the population, thus contributing to the improvement of cost efficiency and to the stability and availability of financing resources,” quotes Hotnews.ro.
EximBank announced in June that it has signed with the National Bank of Greece the acquisition agreement for 99.28% of Banca Romaneasca. As a result of this transaction, EximBank will activate for the first time on the retail banking segment in Romania, thus becoming a universal bank.
Following the completion of this transaction, the market share of EximBank will increase to about 3%, which will lead to a positioning of the bank in the top 10 financial-banking institutions in Romania. The transaction is also analyzed by the Competition Council.
