Investors need specialists, but also a lot of discipline in the execution of projects, as spending the billions of euros of European funds that have been talked about is not the easiest thing to do, said Florin Frunză, CEO of MET Romania Energy, at the Energy Strategy Summit 2022, an event organized by Energynomics.
“There has been a lot of talk at this conference about waves, a new wave of investors is coming. We had the first wave around 2010, it’s been about 12 years and now we’re talking about a new wave. I don’t think we can afford to have waves every 12 years anymore,” he said, offering an analogy to surfing. “We need waves that come often, and we don’t need particularly big waves that only experts, particularly well-prepared investors can ride… We need waves that small and medium investors, prosumers, can also ride… That’s what we need in the coming period. Things are not simple, but not very complicated either, from the investor’s perspective: we need to know what the risk is, and how we manage that risk. It has been known for a very long time that one of the ways to manage risk is PPAs. But very little has been done – it is only now that this market for PPAs is thawing. I think it’s a very important thing to see happen – in order to have a developed PPAs market, it’s important not to have unfair competition – there are all sorts of other schemes,” he said.
Then, the problem of specialists, the lack of human resources in the market, is a serious one.
“After the tide went out, many specialists took their business elsewhere. We need a lot of specialists to spend the billions that have been talked about. Spending money is not very easy. It takes a lot of discipline, having a plan and sticking to it, and having human resources. I see new investors coming in, we are happy about that and we have to somehow get more of them to come,” he added.
