The German government has approved energy-saving measures this winter, including limiting public lighting, in order to reduce gas consumption, Economy Minister Robert Habeck announced on Wednesday, according to Reuters.

“Overall, the measures will lead to energy savings. However, not to the level where we could say: It is enough, for now,” Habeck told journalists after the Cabinet meeting.

“We will reduce the use of gas by approximately 2%-2.5%,” the official added.

Also on Wednesday, legislation was adopted that prioritizes the transport of essential materials and equipment for energy production by rail, in case the level of the Rhine drops further and river transport is affected.

At the same time, the French Government warned that it will not be able to maintain the gas price cap indefinitely, according to Agerpres.

The spokesman for the executive, Olivier Veran, told the press that “price increases may occur” for domestic consumers.

The price of gas is currently frozen in France, and the government has imposed a limit on the price of electricity, but both measures – which cost, according to Reuters, billions of euros – are due to expire in the winter.
