Giles Dickson, CEO of Wind Europe, Europe’s wind industry association, said EU member state governments must support European turbine production as, even with funding from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, a developer of Romanian wind farm installs Chinese turbines, according to e-nergia.ro.
“Ursula von der Leyen spoke at the European Parliament last year and said that ‘the future of clean technology in Europe must be made in Europe.’ This speech was followed by the Wind Energy Package with 15 immediate actions aimed at strengthening Europe’s energy supply chain, and creating a fair and competitive environment, including a level playing field. This is good for job creation, economic growth and energy security.
This is why national governments, including Romania, should ensure that wind projects contain European turbines,” said Giles Dickson.
“Given all this, the European wind industry is extremely disappointed that the EBRD decided last week to finance the Urleasca wind farm in Romania, knowing that this wind farm is purchasing Chinese turbines. This is completely against the spirit of European policies today. WindEurope has raised this issue with the EBRD and the relevant authorities to ensure that this does not happen again and that banks’ lending rules reflect EU policy and the wider European interest,” he said.
