Countries around Romania increased their initial target of renewable energy by 2030, at the recommendation of the European Commission, and so should the new Government of Romania, said Giles Dickson, CEO of WindEurope, present in Bucharest on Thursday at the conference “Energy Transition 2019”, organized by the Romanian Wind Energy Association (RWEA).
“Only seven weeks remain until Romania and the other European states have to finalize the National Plan for Energy and Climate Change, in order to define their renewable energy targets. The initial targets were not very ambitious in general, but many countries have increased their ambitions and now that you have a new government, you have a chance to increase these goals,” he said.
Dickson showed how the countries around Romania have increased their targets. “Bulgaria initially proposed 25%, and the European Commission said Bulgaria’s potential is 27%, and Bulgaria complied and raised its target to the one proposed by the EC. Similarly, Greece proposed 31%, and the EC he said it was ok, just think about it. A new Government has come and increased the target to 35%,” said the chief of WindEurope.
He recalled that Romania assumed, in the document sent to Brussels, a target of 27.9% for 2030, but the European Commission called for its increase to 34%. “We hope the new Government will follow the example of its neighbors and raise the target to or near the level recommended by the EC. It is an opportunity. It will create investments and jobs, so let’s use the economic potential and to the benefit of all citizens,” he said.
