Government decided to extend the deadline for submission of tenders for hydroelectric project Tarniţa with almost a month, it said in a press release issued by the Hidrotarniţa project team.

“As a result of the interest shown by a large number of potential investors to participate in the selection process, the Hidrotarniţa project company announces an extension of the deadline as specified in the advertisement for submission of documents for participation in the pre-qualification stage and preliminary non-binding negotiation, in order to implement Tarnița-Lăpuşteşti Project CHEAP, from 31 October 2014 until 10.00, on 27 November 2014, 10.00”, reads the release.

Building the hydroelectric pumping storage system (HPSS) Tarniţa – Lăpuşteşti, the first plant of its kind in Romania, is a priority in the short and medium term strategy for development the energy sector, reads the statement.

“The project is essential in the context of a steadily growing portfolio of plants based on renewable energy sources with uncontrolled production, which requires the installation of additional capacity for balancing the national electricity system (SEN), which will be remunerated from the ancillary market services system, the market of capacities, and balancing market.”

The plant will be a strategic supplier of energy services / system services in the north-western Romania, an area with a shortage of power generation, but important contribution in the transfer capability to and from Central and Western Europe, in the context of creation of a regional energy market. Its geographical placement in very advantageous conditions for a plant of this type, the complexity of the national energy system structure, based on a diversified energy mix, where the intermittent energy sources will have a significant weight, and in the context in which Romania intends to become a true provider of security and energy independence in the region, CHEAP Tarniţa – Lăpuşteşti has all the prerequisites to become a leading provider of system services in Romania and regionally.

Investing in a hydroelectric pumped storage plant will create a significant number of jobs and will contribute to rising living standards in the area. A peak of employment of 4,000 jobs would be achieved during the construction period of the project, expected to be launched in early 2016 and to last for between 5 and 7 years.
