On Thursday, the Government adopted the Ordinance for the amendment and completion of GEO 27/2022, which eliminates the solar tax for prosumers and updates the support scheme for all electricity and natural gas consumers, which will lead to lower prices for the next 12 months, informs the Ministry of Energy through a statement.
“The Government of Romania approved, at the proposal of the Ministry of Energy, amendments to GEO 27 that will lead to a decrease in the price at which producers sell without being overtaxed from 450 lei/MWh to 400 lei/MWh for electricity, respectively from 150 lei/ “MWh at 120 lei/MWh for natural gas. These values were established following detailed analyzes of the energy markets and following consultations with all actors in the sector,” the press release states.
Also, the form of the ordinance adopted on Thursday eliminates the possibility of introducing the sun tax for prosumers and continues the support scheme for electricity and natural gas consumers.
“As we promised, we are maintaining the energy and gas price ceiling mechanism for another year, until March 31, 2025, so that the population, but also companies, as final consumers, remain protected against possible volatility from the energy and natural gas market, in the current conditions of global unpredictability. We currently have a market that has passed the turbulent period and uncertainty. We have ensured and we want to ensure stability. We are among the EU countries where prices have fell just below the thresholds and we most often see this on gas bills and electricity consumers with a consumption of more than 300 kWh/month.I also kept my promise to eliminate the possibility of introducing the so-called tax on sun, because we want the support of prosumers and a modern, decentralized, digitalized and decarbonized energy system,” said the Minister of Energy, Sebastian Burduja.
By means of this normative act, taking into account the downward trend in electricity and natural gas prices recorded both at the national and European level, the Government has updated the related legal framework, so that these decreases are also reflected in the invoices of final customers.
“We mention that the current scheme also ensured, according to the data published by the European Commission, for the third quarter of 2023, taking into account the capped prices, not those in contracts, but actually those paid by consumers, that Romania has the fourth cheapest gas and the fifth cheapest electricity in the European Union. The Ministry of Energy will also ensure that the return to the mechanisms of the free market will be phased and ensure a fair price for Romanians. Thus, in the process of transition to the free market, for between April 1, 2025 – March 31, 2026, electricity and natural gas suppliers will publish standard offers only for periods for which they have purchased, on the date the offer was drawn up, a quantity of electricity/natural gas at least equal to 50% of the customers’ consumption from the portfolio,” the press release also states.
