In view of the recently approved Taxonomy approved by the European Commission, which accepted nuclear energy as a transition energy, the Government supports the operationalization of units 3 and 4, as well as the refurbishment of unit 1 and SMR reactors, said Romania’s Prime Minister, Nicolae Ciuca.
Ciuca visited the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant on Monday, together with a delegation that included several members of the cabinet, presidential adviser Cosmin Marinescu and the president of the Competition Council, Bogdan Chirițoiu. The role of nuclear energy in Romania’s energy strategy was debated.
“Given the taxonomy recently approved by the European Commission, which has accepted nuclear energy as a transition energy, the Government supports the operationalization of units 3 and 4, as well as the refurbishment of unit 1. We also support the acceleration of projects to implement modular nuclear reactors – small SMR, projects that have been agreed by the Romania-US intergovernmental agreement. These projects will contribute to Romania’s energy independence, in line with the European vision of protecting the environment and reducing carbon dioxide emissions,” said Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca.
The management of Nuclearelectrica presented to the Executive and the government delegation the estimated strategic investment projects worth 9 billion euros, including: Refurbishment of Unit 1, Project of Units 3 and 4, development of small modular reactors in cooperation with NuScale, but also support projects for operation such as the Detritation Plant.
