Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the economic activities of resident units in the European Union totalled 3.4 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2023, a 7% decrease compared to 2022 and an 18% reduction compared to 2013, data published by the European Statistical Office (Eurostat) on Monday showed.
Between 2013 and 2023, producers in almost all economic activities reduced their greenhouse gas emissions. The steepest rate of decline and the largest overall decrease was recorded in the supply of electricity, gas, hot water and air conditioning, with a 43% decline (448 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent), according to Agerpres.
During this period, three other economic activities recorded declines of more than 10%: extractive industry (25%, 18 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent), services (20%, 54 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent) and industry (17%, 142 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent).
The only economic activity with more emissions was transport and storage, with a 14% increase in 2023 compared to 2013.
At the same time, there was a 14% decline in greenhouse gas emissions from households (110 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent).
