During this period, the European Parliament is discussing how public money will be used to recover from the crisis triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has affected Member States’ economies, and how Europe is preparing to face future crises. This money should be used to achieve the goals of the European Green Pact, including achieving climate neutrality in 2050, Greenpeace announces.

The environmental organization condemns two Romanian MEPs, as they “knowingly block Europe’s efforts and divert public money to investments against the general interest and the mandate given by citizens.”

Thus, Siegfried Mureșan and Dragoș Pîslaru, rapporteurs in the EP’s Committee on Economy and Budget, removed the amendments excluding fossil fuels from funding, even after they had been voted in the European Parliament’s Environment Committee, and even proposed explicitly their inclusion among the possible investments, says the environmental organization.

“Thus, not only did they take over the position of the gas industry lobby, but they also neglected the prerogatives of the European Parliament as co-legislator because they placed the full weight of the decision on Taxonomy, a list of criteria based on which the European Commission will judge all investment projects proposed by the Member States, where Parliament’s role will be marginal.”
