Greenpeace Romania has initiated an unusual form of protest, through which 33 activists sent, for 33 hours, uninterrupted, nominal messages to the 33 Romanian MEPs who are expected to vote on October 6, in Brussels, the European climate law.

Greenpeace activists were present on Thursday in University Square in Bucharest to persuade the 33 fellow MEPs to vote against pollution, heat, drought and floods, against all extreme weather events associated with climate change that affect us and endanger our future.

”Each of the 33 will display the Greenpeace message for an hour in the University Square, in a continuous marathon of 33 hours, while the action will end on the evening of October 2,” said Greenpeace officials.

The messages call for a climate-responsible vote and a 65% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030. The percentage is recommended by scientists to limit global warming to just 1.5C and thus combat the dramatic effects of climate change.

“Romania is and will be one of the most affected countries in the European Union when it comes to climate change. We are experiencing one of the most severe droughts in decades, corn and sunflower crops are severely affected. In June, the floods wreaked havoc in the west of the country, and southern Romania is in the process of desertification. Scientists constantly warn us that these phenomena will become more frequent and more intense in the next period, if we do not do something. And we chose to act. With this activity, we want to send a very clear message to the Romanian MEPs – to vote for an ambitious European climate law, to vote for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, to avoid the collapse we are heading towards with quick steps. And, of course, we encourage everyone to send MEPs messages asking them to do the same,” said Vlad Cătună, coordinator of the Climate and Energy campaigns.
