Most power producers in Europe are already struggling with high green energy production and are having difficulties with grid forming. For this reason, grid forming technology will become vital for undersized grids, said Vlad Doicaru, Vice President of Huawei Technologies SRL.
“At EU level, we are getting closer to a set of rules that will apply from this year. Other countries, such as the UK, China, Australia and the US, are preparing guidelines for the adoption of grid forming based on commercial energy storage. One possible direction is for energy distributors to create their own energy storage units to cope with grid imbalances caused by intermittent generators,” he said at the Energy Strategy Summit 2024, organized by Energynomics.
At European level, energy systems face three main challenges from renewables. As wind and PV capacity increases, grid problems arise. For example, in June 2023, the output of PV installations exceeded demand, and as a result, for several consecutive days, the share of green energy in total generation was above 60%. The second pressure is related to the type of energy fed into the grid. In May, Romania had high PV production and Unit 1 had to be shut down.
According to Doicaru, storage systems are becoming increasingly necessary as energy transmission and distribution grids become vulnerable. By 2030, photovoltaic power is forecast to more than triple to 1 TW, while power from gas or coal will decline.
