Romania has a successful past when it comes to nuclear energy, and the Cernavodă Power Plant is one of the nuclear plants with the best capacity factors in the world and with an impeccable past in terms of safety, the general director said on Monday of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mariano Grossi.
“We are at a moment when interesting opportunities appear, in general, on the European energy market and, of course, here Romania plays a unique role. Your country has a successful past when it comes to nuclear energy. The Cernavodă plant is one of the nuclear power plants with the best capacity factors in the world and also with an impeccable safety record. And I think that supports your and your government’s drive to increase nuclear power capacity and, also to enter the area of small modular reactors. There are challenges, you just referred to some of them, in terms of financing, but we addressed them a few days ago, in the presence of your president,” said Grossi, at a conference organized at the end of a meeting with the Minister of Energy, Sebastian Burduja, according to Agerpres.
He emphasized that at the last COP28 conference in Dubai, it was agreed that nuclear energy “must be accelerated”, which is happening in Romania.
“The first nuclear energy summit took place in Brussels where we were able to address these issues. Now that we have a global consensus, agreed at the last COP28 conference in Dubai, nuclear energy should be accelerated. And I see that it is being accelerated in Romania. Agency The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the global nuclear regulatory body, is with you, supporting you every step of the way and I am very happy that we can have these discussions. Tomorrow I will visit the Cernavoda plant and I look forward to doing that,” said Mariano Grossi.
