Romania’s energy sector is a pillar of regional stability and security and as the second-largest natural gas producer in the EU and with a diverse energy mix, the country is charting a course towards total energy independence by 2030, stated H.E. Laura Popescu, Ambassador of Romania to the UK, on the occasion of the conference “International Approach: Catalyzing Romania’s energy future”, organised by Energynomics in London.

“Romania is exceptionally well-positioned to strengthen and expand its economic and commercial ties with the United Kingdom, particularly in the strategic field of energy. The country is among the most favorable locations in Europe for renewable energy investment, boasting some of the best conditions for both solar and wind energy production,” she said, adding that security today is both an economic matter and a geopolitical imperative.

The ambassador added that the war in Ukraine has reshaped the European security landscape, reinforcing the need for resilience, diversification, and strategic cooperation. In this broader context, Romania has been a crucial ally for the vulnerable partners of the Black Sea region, particularly the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.

“We have stood firmly in support of Ukraine, providing humanitarian aid and facilitating supply routes. We have also consistently advocated for Moldova’s European integration, providing economic aid, political support, and strengthening cross-border ties through initiatives that help the country reduce its energy dependency on Russia. Our geographical position grants us both an opportunity and a responsibility to act as a bridge between East and West, ensuring that the extended Black Sea region is not subjected to external coercion,” the ambassador stated.

In this context, Romania remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering energy security, bridging development gaps, and enhancing regional connectivity through the European Union, NATO, and key strategic initiatives. The country will continue to advocate for projects that enhance interconnectivity, resilience, and shared prosperity.

The conference “International Approach: Catalyzing Romania’s energy future” was organised by Energynomics in London with the support of our partners AJ Brand, Elektra Renewable Support, Adrem Asset Management, Enexus, Nofar Energy, Parapet, Wiren.
