Heineken, the world’s largest brewing company, has reached a new milestone in its journey to Net Zero CO2 emissions by signing additional partnerships under its global Net Zero Production programme. These partners will bring technical expertise to support Heineken’s global ambition to reach Net Zero CO2 emissions in Scope 1 and 2 by 2030.
In Romania, Heineken will collaborate with Engie Romania to implement high-efficiency technology and energy solutions, as part of the decarbonization trajectory of the three local factories, from Miercurea-Ciuc, Ungheni (Mureș) and Craiova. Through a solid collaboration between Heineken, Engie Romania and Engie Impact, one of the subsidiaries of the Engie group, various decarbonization solutions will be implemented, including saving energy, installing heat pumps and a biodigester at one of the factories.
“Our partners bring expertise in their field, knowledge of the best available technology solutions and an outside perspective on the problems we are trying to solve. These skills are essential to support Heineken in achieving its ambitions towards Net Zero CO2 emissions in Scope 1 and 2 by 2030, which can only be achieved together. Collaboration with experts is essential to achieve these ambitions with the speed and scale we need,” said Magne Setnes, Chief Supply Chain Officer at Heineken.

This has been a priority for us since announcing Heineken’s global ambition to decarbonize its production. We are also very pleased that we were able to obtain financing through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) for our investment project,” also said Thibaut Boidin, Managing Director, Heineken Romania.
“We are delighted to be Heineken’s chosen partner for the provision of complex and turnkey decarbonisation solutions for three of our client’s industrial sites. We proposed an integrated approach, from strategy to execution, consisting of innovative solutions and technologies for decarbonization and heat utilization. Our strategy combines biomethane production from brewery waste and heat recovery through heat pumps. This customized approach will contribute to Heineken’s global ambitions to reach Net Zero”, added Nicolas Richard, CEO of Engie Romania
The Integrated Net Zero Production program was launched to address the 88% of Heineken’s global Goal 1 and 2 emissions from beverage production, with the aim of establishing a cross-functional team of internal experts and external suppliers, leading to desired results.
Heineken continues to focus on concrete actions to reduce its carbon emissions, working closely with customers and suppliers. At the end of 2023, Heineken has already globally reduced scope 1 and 2 emissions by 34% compared to 2018.
In 2023, Heineken’s global Net Zero and FLAG (Forest, Land and Agriculture) goals were endorsed by the Science Based Targets (SBTi) initiative, making the company the first global brewer to pass this sustainability milestone.
