The first car equipped with electric propulsion manufactured by Icpe in Romania is out of the laboratory and is preparing to make the first road in Bucharest. Icpe celebrated 65 years of existence by launching a comprehensive package of internally developed solutions to electric mobility.
The main component is an innovative electric propulsion solution that equips demonstratively a VW Beetle made in 1966. Adapted for it, Icpe experts used a 22 kW and 33 horsepower electric engine, specifications similar to those of the original. The electric motor has a battery charging control system to be patented.
“We chose VW Beetle as a platform for presenting our equipment primarily to create awareness for public opinion regarding the need for green transport, but also to demonstrate that almost any car can be equipped with electric propulsion”, said Viorel Stanciu, research team leader for electric mobility at Icpe.
The package also includes a photo-voltaic trailer: a charging station for electric vehicles wall-box type 230V-32A, made in accordance with European standards, which can be supplied by an independent power generation.
The photo-voltaic trailer will be put up for sale in a few weeks, as a go-to solution for both public authorities (local, CNADNR etc.) and industrial or business parks administrators, and for small agro businesses that need electricity in areas not covered by Transelectrica network.

PHD Ionel Popa – Director of Center for Professional Services at ICPE. “We then assumed the mission to contribute to the development of Romanian industry, so in 1990 we were present in all sectors, from agriculture to aviation”, said Ionel Popa. This year, Icpe celebrates 65 years as a group of companies that maintain a balance between research and production. With a team of 100 researchers, Icpe is active in new energy sources, in the production of motors and wiring, energy services and is the most active promoter of implementation of electric mobility solutions in Romania.
Icpe is a partner in several European research projects in the field of electric mobility including: Plus Moby, Free Moby, Go4sem, Demotest EV, and in several national projects. A representative example is SIMOPEL project that Icpe coordinates and in which were developed the propulsion and control systems for charging batteries.
