The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has financed all systemic banks in Romania with more than € 1 billion in the last three years, said Cristian Nacu, Senior Country Officer for Romania and Moldova at IFC (WBG).
“Since 1991, since we have been present in Romania, we have financed many projects, but in recent years, IFC has significantly accelerated the development and financing of projects, especially to support the transition of the economy to a green economy. For IFC, Romania is the most important market in Europe”, said Nacu, at the Energy Strategy Summit 2024, organized by Energynomics.
Projects take place on several levels. For example, the IFC is very active in financing the banking and non-banking financial sector, especially through green or blue climate finance. The IFC has even provided technical assistance to banks to be more efficient in structuring green portfolios, but this has been going on for a short time and that is why the share of green assets in total bank assets is barely 4%.
“We also work with companies, especially energy companies, a sector in which we have not been active for over ten years. We are back now because of the great interest in the market. On the one hand, we have helped the government to draft legislation for offshore wind energy and in the coming period we will continue to support the actual tenders for such investments. We are also investing in renewables; we have several onshore wind and photovoltaic projects, and the bank is interested in investing in battery energy storage,” Nacu added.
