Industrial companies and investors in photovoltaic and wind power plants are the ones who could set up a battery energy storage industry in Moldova. To do this, the authorities in Chisinau will need to make a number of changes to current legislation to encourage such developments.

“Industry and the renewables area can get a head start on energy storage, but there is a need for secondary legislation, i.e. an obligation for those who install renewable power plants to have a storage quota according to the installed power,” said Petru Rușeț, managing director of Siemens Energy, during the “Regional Approach Chișinău” conference organized by Energynomics.

The Republic of Moldova’s prospects of accession to the European Union will open up many opportunities in the energy sector, an area where a number of concrete projects already exist and have already secured funding.

According to Rușeț, Moldova’s energy consumer profile has a night-time baseload of 180 MW, so this would currently be the country’s maximum level of installed capacity in renewable power plants. Connecting with the European energy system will create the conditions for the development of the renewable industry.

In the gas area, things are more complicated because of the reduced transport capacity from the west to Moldova. Once the gas market grows, there will be opportunities for new, more efficient gas-fired power plants to compete.

The conference “Regional Approach Chișinău” was organized by Energynomics with the support of our partners Huawei, Siemens Energy, Transgaz.
