Romania wants a North-South corridor for transportation, but also for natural gas, to cross Romania, mentioned President Klaus Iohannis, in Warsaw, with the occasion of attending the economic summit “The Three Seas Initiative”. Another topic of discussion was the issue of US liquefied natural gas as an alternative source of energy. Asked if this project could enter into collision with the interests of Germany, which supports Nord Stream and the Russian gas, the Romanian president confirmed that this issue has been reached.
“In my opinion, we need to be very realistic and think primarily on our economies. If we want energy security, we must have energy availability, to take advantage of all the energy offerings on the market. I do not think anyone should be afraid of this offer of liquefied gas. If the conditions fit into our norms, it is an extra source”, said Iohannis.
The head of state has pointed out that such an alternative will help Europe to reduce its dependence on Russian gas, even if this is not a problem for Romania. The head of state said that Romania’s objectives are to attract investments and to develop its infrastructure, to create a corridor between the Baltic States and the Balkans through Romania. Another topic discussed was energy security and the diversification of energy sources, according to News.ro.
Iohannis said that the aim of this summit is to build “corridors” between North and South, linking three seas: the Adriatic, the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea. According to the president, these “corridors” must be both road and rail, but also in the field of data and energy transport.
“A more special aspect for us is the fact that we invited the participants to make this summit next year in Romania, an invitation that was immediately accepted”, said the head of state. Asked about the particular objectives of Romania in this context, Iohannis said that we will “shape” such targets together with the other participating countries. “We do not want to develop initiatives that separate us from the rest of the EU, but which help our countries and which integrate perfectly into the EU’s big goals”, he said, adding that the infrastructure must be developed with priority, but Romania must also benefit of energy security.
The head of state was also asked about the possibility of a North-South corridor, passing through Romania, saying that the subject was discussed, being a project that must be realized. “We want to benefit from all the economic offers that come to the advantage of our countries”, added the president.
