WELink Group from Ireland, which is currently developing approximately 4 GW of energy storage projects in Portugal, Spain, and Italy, is ready to enter the Romanian market, announced Breandan MacAmhlaoibh, CTO Energy, WELink Group, at the conference “International Approach: Catalyzing Romania’s energy future”, organised by Energynomics in London.

“We chose Romania based on the recommendation of an important contractor who has worked with us in Spain, Portugal, and Italy. We are excited to enter the Romanian market, especially for standalone batteries, because despite progress in renewable energy, Europe’s electrical grid is outdated and requires additional investment. We believe that batteries are essential to support the energy transition, and that’s why our focus in Romania is to support local developers and implement hybridization solutions to increase renewable energy capacity without requiring significant investments in grid infrastructure,” said MacAmhlaoibh.

So far, the company has completed over 1.5 GW of renewable energy projects, the first of which were in the UK. He mentioned that the Romanian workers the company collaborated with played a key role in delivering these projects, bringing a highly skilled and organized team. Subsequently, the company expanded into Southern Europe, focusing on solar projects in Portugal, Spain, and Italy. In Portugal, they built the largest 220 MW photovoltaic plant, which they own and operate. Breandan MacAmhlaoibh expects this project to become the largest privately owned hybrid project in Europe, capable of producing over one terawatt-hour of energy.

The conference “International Approach: Catalyzing Romania’s energy future” was organised by Energynomics in London with the support of our partners AJ Brand, Elektra Renewable Support, Adrem Asset Management, Enexus, Nofar Energy, Parapet, Wiren.
