The leader of the Force of Right Party, MP Ludovic Orban, considers that Romania does not need Russian gas in the hot season if its own resources are exploited efficiently, a problem being in Germany, where the petrochemical industry that provides millions of jobs would be affected.

“The hot season is starting and gas dependence will be greatly reduced for all European countries, and for Romania, in the hot season, we do not need Russian gas if we exploit our resources.

The efficient exploitation of resources (…) can provide us with the necessary consumption, but indeed the problem is related, in particular, to Germany. I don’t think Germany can afford to give up the natural gas it receives from Russia because it is destroying its petrochemical industry, which is extremely important in Germany’s gross domestic product. It is the third largest industry in Germany, providing a huge number of jobs, several million jobs,” said Orban.

He added that a reduction in gas imports could be discussed, but that this meant providing additional resources from elsewhere, according to Agerpres.

“Of course, here the Americans have developed their liquefied natural gas terminals, which are connected to European networks, but I don’t know to what extent they have the capacity to greatly increase the export of liquefied natural gas, so as to make up for a possible loss of the exploited gas. Europe has a gas dependence of about 35% today, so 35% of the gas consumed by Europe comes from the Russians. I think that a reduction in the amount of gas can be achieved and it will hit Russia without any discussion,” concluded Ludovic Orban.
