Romania reached, in February 2023, 27,590 electric vehicles, after as many electric cars were registered last year as in the last 10 years combined, while the number of public chargers in the country barely exceeded the 3,300 mark, according to a Lektri.co study.

The study indicates that, in the first two months of 2023, a total of 2,247 electric vehicles were registered. January, with 1,132 EVs, registered an increase of 80% compared to the same period of the previous year, and February marked an evolution of 108%, compared to last year, with 1,115 registered units.

Dacia Spring model keeps the podium, with 1,057 units registered (497 in January and 560 in February). In the high-end segment, where Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche models are accounted for, a cumulative 190 units were registered in the two months.

At the same time, as far as the charging infrastructure is concerned, at the end of February, there were 3,389 public chargers in Romania, without restrictions (of which 857 CCS/CHAdeMO and 2,492 Type 2), distributed in 1,503 locations (according to the PlugShare portal).

“Last year’s extraordinary results prove to us that Romanians are increasingly open to e-mobility and, relying on the upward trends, we expect 2023 to be at least as productive a period for the electric vehicle market. At the moment we are happy from a promising start to the year and, through our field of activity, we are focusing all our efforts on bringing added value to this segment on a local level,” said Claudiu Suma, CEO of Lektri.co.

According to last year’s results, the electric vehicle market in Romania exceeded the threshold of 25,000 registered units, the number of EVs registered in 2022 equaling the total number achieved in the previous 10 years. Dacia Spring had a market share of 55%, the volume of units registered by this model equaling the total number of electric vehicles registered in 2021. Second place in the ranking of EV registrations of 2022 is held by Tesla.
