The total liberalization of the gas market, which took place on July 1, 2020, represents the most significant moment of the year in the energy sector, which should have brought lower bills for Romanians this winter. In reality, however, things are far from like this: only 10% of Romanians have changed the contract for a lower price, and for the remaining 90% the bills will be as high as last winter, according to Agerpres.
This is although on the gas exchange the price of one MWh hass halved, as compared to last year’s similar period. For the vast majority of Romanians, however, this decrease is not found in the bills, as would have been normal.
According to the data provided to Agerpres by the National Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE), out of the 3,378,794 household customers regulated on June 30, 2020, a number of 395,336 household customers concluded, between July 1 and October 31, 2020, a contract related to the supply of natural gas in a competitive regime, with the current supplier or with a new supplier. That is a little over 10%. ANRE states that it does not have data to detail whether they only changed their contract or their supplier.
