Marius Opriș, Ascendis partner, brought a different perspective on Romania’s competitive advantages at the Energynomics Awards 2024 Gala. In contrast to speeches focused on resources and investment, he emphasised the human factor, seen as essential to the country’s progress and attractiveness.

“Romania’s biggest competitive advantage is not discussed enough – neither in the media, nor on social networks – and yet it is created by the people in this room. Their energy, motivation and dedication make any change possible,” Opriș emphasised.

He presented a global study conducted by Gallup in 2024 that positions Romania as the leader in Europe in terms of employee engagement levels. In a global context, this indicator is associated with motivation and energy that generates results. According to the study, Romania is the only European country with top engagement in a region where this indicator is traditionally low. “The impact of low engagement is enormous: in other parts of Europe, it represents 9.9% of annual GDP,” Opriș explained.

Romania is fertile ground for innovation and quick results

Opriș illustrated this by comparing Romania with other European countries, emphasising that Romania offers unique conditions for investment and development. He recounted a discussion with a French director who said: “I came to Romania because here I can do in six months what in France I could do in five years, in Germany in ten, and in other countries maybe never.” This agility of the local labour force is a key reason why Romania attracts international investment and talent.

He attributed this performance to local leaders, whether in the public or private sector, but also to small and medium-sized organisations that promote outstanding initiatives. “This people energy is generated by small and big leaders in organisations at all levels. This is something to celebrate,” Opriș said.

In conclusion, Opriș emphasised the crucial role of leaders as drivers of change. “The orchestra can play well without a conductor, but a true leader adds something special: brighter colours, longer pauses, more weight – that element that makes the difference,” he concluded, encouraging the maximum use of this unique human potential.
