Romanian companies have to take into account the new European requirements and the increased cost of carbon certificates and raw materials such as imported gas should lead to increased adoption of waste to energy solutions, Markus Bolhàr-Nordenkampf, director Valmet EMEA Energy Operations, told energynomics.ro.
As coal is phase out and waste can no longer be dumped to landfills, according to European procedures, recycling will create new opportunities on the waste-to-energy market, says Bolhar.
And subsidizing the waste-to-energy system will take shape, as is the case in other European countries, such as Austria.
“In Romania we are developing slowly, but steadily. Coal phase out is an issue that will come up sooner or later, as coal is being phased out in other countries in Europe – less in the Eastern Europe, but it will follow as well here, as the society drive itself towards a carbon-free energy. This will close the waste to energy loop, and more small decentralized waste to energy plants will emerge. These will offer heat and electricity. And these are the key issues in Romania for the near future,” Bolhar said.

The seminar addressed topical topics in the field of energy, such as waste-to-energy solutions, relevant case studies from the Valmet portfolio, flue gas cleaning solutions, automation technologies, bioethanol plant products and other solutions.
