The hyper-competitiveness in the energy supply market before the price cap led to a semi-rational battle, in the sense that bids for customers were focussed exclusively on price. Now, the energy price cap has made things worse,” said Martin Moise, vice-president of the Employers’ Organisation of Producers of Energy from Renewable Sources in Romania (PATRES).

“Competition has been so fierce that business models that existed ten years ago have been lost. The price cap has dramatically worsened the situation, because the price cap no longer has anything to do with the realities of the market,” he said at the conference “Romanian Energy Market – Facts of 2025”.

The prosumer becomes a game changer in the market the moment he has installed an energy storage battery. Things get more complicated if the prosumer has also installed a charging station for his electric car. All this leads to high imbalance costs. This is why fundamental changes are needed in the relationship between consumers and energy suppliers. For example, it is possible that dynamic tariffs or binomial tariffs will appear on the market.

“The need to take action is urgent. Romania is at the end of the network, so it is in a vulnerable situation. If we don’t realise that we need to read the meters, deregulate the market and bring things closer to the truth, I think we are going to run into some very big problems,” Mr Moise added.
