Although a very high percentage of energy production will come from renewable sources, the 45% share of global electric motor consumption will not change, said Mihai Priboianu, Product Manager, ABB Romania, at the “Digitalization and Energy Efficiency – Timisoara” conference, organized by Energynomics.
“It is clear that we need to reaffirm our commitment to reducing this consumption. We at ABB are committed to this energy efficiency trend to provide better and better solutions for our customers, which use less energy, have lower emissions and reduce the total cost of using these products, sustainably. It is estimated that by 2040 the number of engines will double globally. If all the engines in the market were replaced with high energy efficiency engines, with very good efficiency, savings of up to 10% would be made”, he stated.
Changing a single engine can make a difference, both at the customer and industry level.

“High-efficiency ABB motors lead to a lower overall cost of use, compliance with global standards, and have a much longer service life. ABB has a very large portfolio of low voltage electric motors. We operate in all classical industries, from cement, chemical industry, oil and gas, to the food industry, and the applications vary from the simplest to the most complicated – compressors, pumps, ventilation, cranes, etc. Our series of engines are in line with the global trend – we have general-purpose engines, engines for use in high-performance processes or specific engines. Energy conversion involves losses, but they can be reduced – in addition to the efficiency change, the windings can be dimensioned so that the energy-efficient motors have a longer lifespan – and lower losses”, he added
The Ecodesign Directive, which imposes new efficiency standards on existing engines, entered the market on 1 July. “ABB has had solutions for many years now, but now all engines must be in the IE3 efficiency class, and the option of an IE2 efficiency class with converter no longer applies.”
The new Directive introduces the notion of efficiency class for frequency converters. “A new thing, which contributes all the more to obtaining electric drive solutions with maximum efficiency,” Priboianu added. ABB already produces engines at IE5 standard.
