Storage operators will be important players in the next 25-30 years in the renewable energy market, as this unpredictable production must somehow be taken over and managed, said Zoltan Nagy-Bege, head of the Energy Market Directorate, Ciga Energy.
“Storage operators, batteries or another type of storage, because there are other storage technologies, not only batteries, will be important players in this market in the next 25-30 years, because Europe calculates in the long term with renewables – and this unpredictable production must somehow be taken over and managed,” said Nagy-Bege, according to Agerpres.
He pointed out that there is an abundance of energy in the market, cheap energy, in certain time slots.
“There are few consumers who can afford to consume only in these intervals, when there is a surplus in the market and prices are low or even negative. But, putting together the intentions of further investments, it may be a good sign for Romania. If we want price indications, we will have to keep an eye on CFDs (contracts for difference, n.r.) because, in theory, there will be some auctions. Obviously, the prices will not necessarily be the market price, they will be prices assumed by certain investors exclusively based on costs, investment and operating costs, where of course balancing costs will play their role, but auctions of 2,000 MW this year and another 3,000 next year, if it happens, for CFD, not only for Romania, but also for region, would have the power to give some price signals,” added Nagy-Bege.
In his opinion, due to the fact that the reference price is calculated exclusively on the basis of the PZU price (Day Ahead Market, e.n.), the tendency of these investors will be to sell energy exclusively on the PZU, which will come with even greater pressure , so there will be even more negative price ranges, low reference prices, lower and lower, and the state will have to compensate.
