OMV Petrom has developed, at the Petrobrazi refinery, a new maritime fuel with a low sulfur content, up to 0.5%. This product is unique on the Romanian market. The fuel allows shipping companies to reduce sulfur emissions and comply with International Maritime Organization (IMO) rules that entered into force in 2020. The first delivery took place in Port Constanta at the end of last year.
The process of obtaining low sulfur marine fuel was made possible by the investment of 3 million euro in production logistics facilities within the Petrobrazi refinery. The implementation of the project took almost two years. By the end of last year, shipping carriers consumed fuel with a sulfur content of 3.5%.
Until the launch of this product, the Romanian market was supplied exclusively by imports. From now on, at Petrobrazi refinery, at least 70Kt of low sulfur maritime fuel can be produced annually, depending on the production optimization to meet the demand and maximize the added value.
